Choosing the Right Frame Size for Your Artwork
This guide will help you select the perfect frame size for your artwork, whether you prefer a standard size or a custom made to measure frame.
Standard vs. Custom Frames
We offer dozens of standard frame sizes to accommodate a wide range of artwork, from small prints to large maps. If you can't find the perfect size, you have two options:
- Custom Frame: Order a frame made to the exact dimensions of your artwork.
- Standard Frame with Custom Mount: Use a larger standard frame with a custom-cut mount to create borders around your artwork.
What You'll Need
- The artwork you want to frame
- Tape measure
- Pen and paper (optional)
Important Points to Remember
- Frame Measurements: All frames are measured based on their internal dimensions (width x height). So, a 16” x 12” frame will hold a 16” x 12” artwork (or photo).
- Visible Area: Frames typically cover a small portion of the artwork's edges. If you want to see the entire image, consider a clip frame.
- Frame Rebate: Frames have a slight lip that overlaps the artwork by 3-5mm on each side. This secures the artwork and prevents it from falling out.
- Mount Overlap (if using a mount): You should deduct 6mm from your overall measurements to create a mount that overlaps your artwork by 3mm on each side. This prevents the artwork from showing through the mount's opening and allows for secure placement.
- External Frame Size: If you're framing for a specific space, consider the frame's external dimensions to ensure it fits properly.
Measuring Your Artwork
- Lay your artwork flat on a surface.
- Measure the height and width of the area you want to frame.
- Trim the artwork only if absolutely necessary.
Trimming Tips
- Use a paper cutter for small artworks.
- For larger pieces, use a sharp Stanley knife and ruler.
- Ensure straight cuts – avoid using scissors.
We recommend against trimming irreplaceable pieces like museum-quality art or sentimental photos.
