How to Measure Your Artwork for a Frame

How to Measure Your Artwork for a Frame

Measuring your artwork accurately is the first step towards getting the perfect frame. Whether it's a treasured photo, a print, or an original piece of art, this guide will walk you through how to measure it correctly so that your new frame from Wall Space fits like a glove.

What You'll Need

  • A ruler or tape measure (ideally with millimetres)
  • A flat surface to lay your artwork on
  • Pen and paper (or your phone) to note down the measurements

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Lay Your Artwork Flat

Place your artwork on a clean, flat surface. Make sure it's fully unrolled or unfolded. Avoid measuring artwork while it's in an old frame or mount – we want the actual size of the piece itself.

Step 2: Measure Width and Height

Using your ruler or tape measure, note down the full width and height of the artwork. Always measure to the nearest millimetre. For example, your piece might measure 297mm x 420mm (which is A3 size).

Note: If the edges are uneven, measure at the widest points to ensure full coverage.

Step 3: Consider a Mount (Optional)

If you'd like a mount (a border between your frame and the artwork), you'll want to choose a frame that accommodates both your artwork size and the width of the mount. Don’t worry — our online frame designer makes this simple and will calculate the mount for you.
